PET is a widely used engineering plastic today, but it is difficult to degrade naturally. Austrian researchers have developed a new method that uses fungi to degrade this material and recycle it.
Enzymes are special proteins that act as biocatalysts. Earlier, researchers at institutions such as Graz University of Technology and Vienna University of Technology have discovered enzymes that can "resolve" PET in some fungal strains.
Based on previous research results, the Austrian Center for Industrial Biotechnology reported on the 11th that they have used genetic engineering technology to improve the ability of using fungi and their enzymes to efficiently decompose PET into initial monomers. The decomposed initial monomer can be reused to produce high-quality materials.
Georg Gübitz, head of the Enzymes and Polymers Research Group at the Austrian Institute for Industrial Biotechnology, said that this process can avoid the generation of trash, make resources reusable, and harmless to the environment.
At present, the center has established partnerships with some companies to conduct applied experiments. The researchers also plan to further increase the rate at which the fungus breaks down PET waste, from the current approximately 24 hours to several hours.
