Most feed additives on the market claim to improve animal production efficiency, but some of them are very sensitive to changes in temperature, pH and other environmental conditions, and it is easy to cause loss or reduction of active ingredients of feed additives due to changes in these factors.
Microcapsules are the process of encapsulating a liquid, gas or solid into a tiny capsule. The technique can protect the activity of the feed additive by coating a closed coating around the active molecule to protect the additive from the environment, and can also control the release rate of the feed additive during digestion.
At present, there are more and more additives (amino acids, essential oils, vitamins and minerals) using microcapsule technology, and the materials used in capsules include sugars, gums, proteins and lipids (Gibbs et al., 1999).
The capsules may be composed of an active substance with a protective coating or multiple protective coatings, or the active ingredients may be simply mixed with the protective coating. However, such simple mixture capsules generally do not effectively protect feed additives from environmental factors.
