In the US, Ideal Power, a photovoltaic inverter (PCS) manufacturer, released a microgrid PCS for photovoltaic power generation and storage batteries in July.
At present, the construction of microgrids is based on custom projects. If it can be built with a combination of standard equipment and components, the entry barrier for microgrids will be reduced. It is said that the integration of PCS helps to realize this idea.
The PCS has three input and output ports with output power of 30 kW. The first one is used for the input of the photovoltaic power generation system, the second one is used for outputting to the battery, and the third is used to connect the photovoltaic power generation system and the battery to the microgrid.
The PCS also supports the construction of DC microgrids in addition to software required for linkage with diesel power generation and charging infrastructure for pure electric vehicles (EVs). And support the flexible linkage with the grid: it can be linked with the advanced grid, it can also be used as a micro grid.
The integration of PCS for micro-grid operators will not only reduce the number of PCS units but also reduce the installation area and cost. According to Ideal Power, the use of this PCS can reduce production costs, transportation costs, installation costs, and the size and weight of the PCS by about 90% compared to when using PCS with different functions.
In addition, the new product has improved the interoperability of the photovoltaic power generation system and the battery, and the efficiency can be improved by about 10%. As a result, the diesel power generation operation load in the microgrid can be reduced, and the fuel cost can also be reduced.
