RTP develops glass fiber reinforced PLA bio-based composites

Thermoplastics composites company RTP claims that the industry’s first glass fiber-reinforced polylactic acid (PLA) composite line has been commercialized. This product overcomes the limitations of non-modified PLA and has greater strength, stiffness and thermal properties. .

Bio-based polymer PLA is a sustainable alternative to traditional hydrocarbon-based thermoplastics, such as polyesters, polyolefins and high-impact polystyrene.

“Our new glass-fiber-reinforced PLA composites have improved performance in terms of strength and temperature, and they have a wider range of uses,” said Will Taber, business manager at RTP's headquarters.

The glass fiber content in the reinforced PLA accounts for 10-40%, and it can meet the special requirements of individual customers in home appliances, automobiles, consumer products, electrical appliances and electronic products, and the construction market.

"The mechanical properties of PLA Thermoplastic Composites produced by RTP meet or exceed many of the traditional plastics," Taber said.
