Researchers at Northwestern University in the United States believe that they have created an excellent new material for batteries and super capacitors that will help increase the range and charging speed of electric vehicles. This material is called "covalent organic framework" (COF), an organic crystal structure that is suitable for energy storage and has many pores.
Chemist William Dichtel and his team added conductive polymers and the result was a "modified redox COF." Dichtel believes it benefits both batteries and supercapacitors, both of which are important for electric cars.
Researchers claim that their materials can stably withstand 10,000 cycles of charge and discharge. Its energy storage is 10 times that of the non-modified COF electric energy source, and the charging speed is increased by 10-15 times - it can be said that it is the best of both worlds.
In practical applications, the battery can store a large amount of energy under slow discharge; while the super-capacitor is charged very quickly, it can absorb only a small amount of energy.
The research paper titled "Superior Charge Storage and Power Density of a Conducting Polymer-Modified Covalent Organic Framework" has been published recently. Published in the ACS Central Science journal.
