A Finnish company recently released a news report saying that the company and its partners have successfully developed a new technology for high-efficiency silicon nanorod solar cells that can not only improve the energy efficiency of solar cells but also reduce production costs.
The company called Picosun said that the new solar cells can achieve energy conversion efficiencies of more than 9% and have good long-term stability.
According to a press release issued by the company, they mainly use silicon nanorods to cultivate silicon nanorods "forests" on cheaper substrates such as glass. In this way, the amount of silicon used can be reduced first, thereby reducing the cost, and secondly, the energy conversion efficiency of the solar cell can be significantly improved.
Compared with traditional two-dimensional thin-film solar cells, the three-dimensional structure of carbon nanorods of the new type of solar cells has higher surface activity and improved light absorption efficiency. In addition, the position of the PN junction of this solar cell is closer to the surface, which can increase the mobility of minority carriers and thus increase the amount of electricity generated by the solar cell.
